Very Severe Cyclonic Storm "Hamoon" in the Bay of Bengal, Cyclonic Storm "Tej" Weakens Over Yemen

October 24, 2023 – Two significant cyclonic events have been observed and closely monitored by the India Meteorological Department, impacting both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

Cyclonic Storm “Tej” Weakens Over Yemen

The severe cyclonic storm “Tej,” pronounced as Tej, which was situated over coastal Yemen, has shown signs of weakening. Over the past six hours, it moved west-northwestward at a speed of 11 kmph and transitioned into a cyclonic storm. As of 1130 hours IST on October 24, it was positioned at approximately latitude 16.1°N and longitude 51.5°E, situated about 60 km west of Al Ghaidah in Yemen and 290 km west-southwest of Salalah in Oman. The system is expected to continue its west-northwestward movement and further weaken into a depression over the next six hours. Wind speeds are forecasted to decrease gradually.

Warnings and Forecasts for Cyclonic Storm “Tej”

  • Wind warning for the west-central Arabian Sea: Gale wind speeds of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph are currently prevailing, expected to gradually decrease to squally wind speeds of 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph from the evening of October 24.
  • Sea condition for the west-central Arabian Sea: Very rough to rough sea conditions are ongoing and expected to persist for the next six hours.
  • Fishermen warning: Fishermen are advised not to venture into the west-central Arabian Sea until the night of October 24.

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Hamoon” in the Bay of Bengal

A very severe cyclonic storm, “Hamoon,” pronounced as Hamoon, has been identified over the northwest and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal. Over the past six hours, it moved east-northeastward at a speed of 23 kmph. As of 1130 hours IST on October 24, it was located near latitude 20.3°N and longitude 89.9°E, approximately 330 km east of Paradip in Odisha, 290 km east-southeast of Digha in West Bengal, 190 km south of Khepupara in Bangladesh, and 305 km southwest of Chittagong, Bangladesh. This cyclonic storm is anticipated to weaken gradually into a severe cyclonic storm over the next six hours. It is then expected to continue weakening while moving northeastward and is likely to cross the coast of Bangladesh, close to the south of Chittagong, by the early hours of October 25 as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 80 to 90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.

Warnings and Forecasts for Cyclonic Storm “Hamoon”

  • Rainfall warning: Various regions, including Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, south Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and east Arunachal Pradesh, are expected to receive varying levels of rainfall.
  • Wind warning for different regions, including the Northeast Bay of Bengal, Northwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh, north Myanmar coasts, Mizoram, Tripura, south Assam, and Manipur, is in effect, with varying wind speeds and directions.
  • Sea conditions in different areas, including the northeast Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, adjoining north Myanmar coasts, northwest Bay of Bengal, and the adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, have been advised.
