CR’s Nagpur Maintenance Depot Powers Make in India Initiative with “WAG 12” Locomotives

Central Railway’s (CR) Nagpur Maintenance Depot is playing a pivotal role in the Make in India initiative through its collaboration with Alstom in the production and maintenance of the “WAG 12,” hailed as the Most Powerful Locomotive in India, boasting an impressive 12,000 HP. This collaboration falls under the Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Ltd (MELPL) initiative.

Key Features of the WAG 12 Electric Locomotive:

  • Traction Horsepower: 12,000 HP (9 MW)
  • Maximum Speed: 120 Kmph
  • Axle Load: 22.5/25 Tonne
  • Hauling Capability: 6,300 tons at 60 Kmph on a 1/150 slope

Manufactured at the expansive Madhepura site in Bihar and diligently maintained at the Nagpur depot, these WAG 12 locomotives mark India’s entry into the league of six nations globally producing high-horsepower locomotives indigenously.

The Nagpur depot, sprawling over 17.6 acres, encompasses a 10,800 square meters depot, a 1,777 square meters warehouse, 3.29 kilometers of track, and a 3.5-kilometer 25KV power supply. It is tasked with overseeing the maintenance of 251 to 500 E-locomotives over a four-year period. Technical supervision is provided by Alstom, with maintenance/support staff supplied by Indian Railways.

This collaborative effort not only strengthens India’s position in the global locomotive manufacturing landscape but also underscores the successful implementation of the Make in India initiative in the railway sector. The Nagpur Maintenance Depot stands as a symbol of innovation and technological prowess in the realm of high-powered locomotives.
