CRS Approves Speed Limits for Passenger, Freight Trains on Katra-Banihal Route
The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has granted approval for passenger and freight trains to operate on the Katra-Banihal rail route, setting specific speed limits. The main line will have a maximum speed of 85 km/h, while trains passing through turnouts will be restricted to 15 km/h. The approval covers the final 16.5 km stretch between Reasi and Katra, part of the 111 km Katra-Banihal rail corridor.
On January 7, 2025, CRS Dinesh Chandra Deshwal conducted a motor trolley inspection along this section, reviewing key infrastructure such as the Anji Railway Bridge, Tunnel T33, and the Ban Ganga Bridge. Deshwal also oversaw the load testing of the Anji Bridge and examined Tunnel T33, one of the most challenging sections of the route. The inspection was aimed at ensuring the safety and stability of these critical components.
Following this inspection, on January 8, 2025, a speed trial was conducted, with trains running at speeds up to 110 km/h. The trial results were deemed satisfactory, and CRS gave the green light for the operation of trains at the approved speeds. Passenger and freight trains will now be permitted to travel at a maximum speed of 85 km/h on the main line and 15 km/h on turnouts.
