Central Railways Leads Innovation in Electrical Department, Wins Top Prize for Rotor Design
In a groundbreaking achievement, Central Railways (CR) has secured the first position in the “Suggestion Scheme for Best Innovation of Indian Railways” in the Electrical department. The accolade is attributed to the design and implementation of the Modified ZIRCONIUM COPPER STAMPING in the Three Phase Rotor Type, a crucial component used in locomotives.
The Three Phase Rotor Type, an integral part of locomotives, plays a pivotal role in railway operations, demanding an annual production of 6,000 such rotors. CR’s innovative approach to the design and implementation of Modified ZIRCONIUM COPPER STAMPING in the rotor is expected to result in an annual savings of Rs 6.3 crore.
For this commendable innovation, Central Railways has been honored with the prestigious 1st prize, a cash award of Rs. 3 lakh. The 2nd prize, amounting to Rs. 2 lakh, was secured by South Central Railways (SCR), while the 3rd prize of Rs. 1 lakh went to Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala.
The modification involves a strategic optimization of Zirconium-Copper (Zr-Cu) stamping in the rotor, with a particular focus on reducing silver brazing rod consumption. With 26 Zr-Cu stampings in each rotor, the innovative approach entails using four modified stampings as outer and inner rings on each side. These modified stampings feature closed slots, effectively minimizing silver wastage, enhancing brazing quality, and reducing brazing time.
Central Railways’ pioneering work not only positions them at the forefront of innovation in the railway sector but also underscores the commitment to cost-effective and sustainable solutions in locomotive manufacturing. This achievement is a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence and efficiency in the Indian Railways.
