76-Year-Old Donor Saves Life of 30-Year-Old Man with Liver Cirrhosis
In a heartwarming display of courage and compassion, the family of a 76-year-old road accident victim, who tragically succumbed to a brain haemorrhage, chose to donate his liver, thereby giving a new lease of life to a 30-year-old man battling liver cirrhosis. The remarkable journey of this life-saving organ began at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh and ended at Max Hospital, Saket, covering a distance of 28.4 km in just 44 minutes through a specially created green corridor.
The victim, admitted to Fortis Shalimar Bagh after a severe head injury sustained in a road accident, underwent emergency surgery to remove a clot in the brain. Despite exhaustive efforts by a multidisciplinary team, he could not be revived. However, his family’s selfless decision to donate his liver has brought hope to another life.
Dr. Sonal Gupta, Director & HOD Neurosurgery at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh, expressed admiration for the donor’s family and emphasized the critical role of organ donation in saving lives. The seamless collaboration between medical teams and the police facilitated the swift transport of the liver, underscoring the importance of organ donation protocols.
Deepak Narang, Facility Director at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh, lauded the donor’s family for their generosity amidst grief and emphasized the need for more people to register for organ donation. He highlighted the clockwork precision of medical teams that made this donation possible, urging others to follow suit.
According to NOTTO, once a patient is declared brain dead, hospitals can counsel families for organ donation. In this case, necessary clearances were obtained, including a No Objection Certificate in a Medico-Legal Case (NOC-MLC), and a green corridor was requested for swift transportation.
India faces a significant shortage of organ donors, with only a small percentage of patients in need receiving transplants annually. Lack of awareness and misconceptions contribute to this gap, emphasizing the need for education on the benefits of organ donation.
