President Murmu Awards Swachh Survekshan Honors to Recognize Outstanding Cleanliness Achievements
In a distinguished ceremony organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, President Droupadi Murmu bestowed the prestigious Swachh Survekshan awards, acknowledging remarkable accomplishments in cleanliness initiatives.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu highlighted the significance of Swachh Survekshan as a crucial step in elevating cleanliness standards with broad public participation. Commending the collective progress on the path from ‘Cleanliness to Prosperity,’ she expressed satisfaction that cleanliness campaigns are opening avenues for the economic self-reliance of women.
The President lauded Safai Mitras as the frontline warriors in the nation’s cleanliness campaign, emphasizing the importance of ensuring their safety, dignity, and welfare. Emphasizing the need for mechanized cleaning and a move towards sanitation through innovative methods, she underlined the importance of eliminating manholes to establish a society that values sensitivity.
President Murmu expressed contentment with the focus on circularity in waste management during the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission. She emphasized that the circular economy’s principles of recycling and reusing goods are instrumental in achieving sustainable development and have significant potential in waste management.
The President advocated a holistic approach, stating that considering the value from waste reveals that everything possesses value, and nothing should be deemed as waste. She cited examples of generating biogas from green waste and electricity from refuse-derived fuel, showcasing the innovative and progressive thinking behind waste management initiatives.
With approximately one-third of the population residing in urban areas, President Murmu stressed the importance of cleanliness for the health and development of cities and towns. She expressed concern over vast amounts of urban land buried under garbage and lauded the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for eliminating dump-sites. Confident in achieving the goal of zero dump-sites, she urged effective action in all urban areas.
Lastly, President Murmu called upon the youth as vital stakeholders, envisioning a clean India by 2047. Encouraging the younger generation to strive for the ambitious goal of making India one of the cleanest countries globally, she expressed confidence that India would celebrate its centenary of independence with this remarkable achievement.
