PM Narendra Modi to Inaugurate Assam’s First Vande Bharat Express, Electrified Sections, and DEMU/MEMU Shed
Guwahati, May 29, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to mark a significant milestone in Assam’s transportation sector as he virtually flags off Assam’s first Vande Bharat Express on May 29 at 12 noon. The state-of-the-art train, known for its speed and comfort, will provide the people of the region with enhanced travel options and is expected to boost tourism. Connecting Guwahati with New Jalpaiguri, the Vande Bharat Express will revolutionize travel on this route by reducing the journey time by approximately an hour compared to the current fastest train.
With the Vande Bharat Express, passengers traveling between Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri can expect a shorter travel time of 5 hours and 30 minutes, whereas the current fastest train takes 6 hours and 30 minutes for the same journey. This significant time-saving will enhance connectivity and convenience for commuters, promoting seamless travel experiences between these important cities.
In addition to the inauguration of the Vande Bharat Express, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate 182 route kilometers of newly electrified sections. This development aims to provide pollution-free transportation and enable trains to operate at higher speeds, ultimately reducing the overall travel time. Furthermore, the electrification of these sections will pave the way for trains running on electric traction to extend their services into Meghalaya, enhancing connectivity within the northeastern states.
During the virtual ceremony, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate a state-of-the-art DEMU/MEMU shed in Lumding, Assam. This newly constructed facility holds great importance as it will play a pivotal role in maintaining DEMU rakes operating in the region, ensuring better operational efficiency and reliability. The establishment of this shed underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing and upgrading the railway infrastructure in Assam, providing a more seamless travel experience for passengers.
