Mizoram Welcomes Its First Rail-Transported Cars: A Landmark in Regional Connectivity

In a historic development for Mizoram’s transportation sector, Sairang Railway Station has received its first-ever direct inward automobile rake, carrying 119 Maruti Suzuki cars from Changsari near Guwahati. This milestone marks the arrival of the state’s first rail-carried vehicles, significantly boosting infrastructure and economic prospects.
The rake, loaded with popular models, arrived at Sairang, just 20 km from Aizawl, reducing reliance on lengthy and costly road transport from Assam. This shift is expected to lower logistics expenses, increase vehicle availability in the capital, and benefit local automobile dealers, service centers, and consumers. It underscores Indian Railways’ dedication to enhancing connectivity in the Northeast, promoting inclusive growth, and integrating remote regions into the national supply chain.
This achievement builds on the recent completion of the Bairabi-Sairang New Railway Line, a 51.38 km broad-gauge project that has transformed Mizoram’s isolation. Carved through rugged hilly terrain, the line features an impressive engineering feat: 45-48 tunnels (totaling over 12 km) and numerous bridges, including one of India’s tallest railway piers at over 100 meters.
The project, costing over ₹8,000 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025. During the ceremony, he flagged off three new train services: the Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express (linking Aizawl to Delhi), the Sairang-Guwahati Mizoram Express, and the Sairang-Kolkata Express. These services have integrated Mizoram fully into India’s national rail network for the first time.
Passenger response has been overwhelming. The trains are operating at high occupancy rates: Rajdhani Express at 147%, Mizoram Express at 115%, and Kolkata Express at 139%. Travelers praise the services for being convenient, affordable, and time-saving, improving access to major cities, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities in neighboring states.
Freight operations commenced shortly after inauguration. The first freight train on September 14, 2025, carried 21 cement wagons from Assam. Since then, the route has facilitated transport of essential commodities like cement, construction materials, sand, and stone chips. Parcel services began on September 19 with Anthurium flowers shipped to Delhi via the Rajdhani’s parcel van.
From September 17 to early December 2025, 17 rakes have been handled, establishing the line as a vital logistics corridor. This reduces transport costs substantially, easing the burden on road networks prone to landslides and delays.
The arrival of rail-carried automobiles represents a new chapter, enhancing the automobile sector’s efficiency and affordability. As Mizoram embraces rail connectivity, these developments promise accelerated economic growth, better trade opportunities, and stronger ties with the mainland—fulfilling decades-long aspirations for seamless integration.
