DFCCIL Achieves Major Milestone: Electric Locomotive Trials Begin on Vaitarna–New Kharbao Section

In a significant leap towards seamless freight movement, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) successfully conducted trial runs of electric locomotives on the crucial 30-km Vaitarna–New Kharbao section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) on 30 November 2025.

This achievement paves the way for early commissioning of the strategically vital Vaitarna–Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) stretch, providing direct, congestion-free rail connectivity to India’s largest container port. The move will dramatically boost container evacuation, reduce truck dependency, and slash logistics costs for EXIM trade.

Since the WDFC became operational, more than 1.24 lakh freight trains have already plied on the corridor. November 2025 witnessed a new record of 200 freight trains in a single day, underlining the corridor’s growing reliability and capacity.

With this trial, only 72 km of the final stretch now remains before the entire Dadri–JNPT Western Corridor is fully operational. The upcoming chain of modern Goods Consolidation Terminals (GCTs) and Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) along the route will further integrate rail, road and port infrastructure, strengthening India’s logistics backbone.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated the DFCCIL team, stating, “Every trial run brings us closer to doubling freight capacity and making Indian Railways the engine of Viksit Bharat’s $5-trillion economy dream.”

Once completed, the 1,506-km WDFC will decongest the busy Mumbai–Delhi rail trunk route, enable heavier and longer trains, and cut transit time by nearly 50%, and significantly lower carbon emissions.

The successful Vaitarna–New Kharbao trials mark yet another step in India’s journey to world-class freight infrastructure. Full commissioning of the JNPT link is now just months away.
