Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Rapid Rail’s First Section to Open on October 20
Inauguration by Prime Minister Modi to Mark Historic Progress in India's Public Transit
The countdown to a significant milestone in India’s public transportation system is nearing its end, as the first 17-kilometer section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Corridor is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20. This landmark marks a remarkable leap forward in the nation’s commitment to fast, safe, and efficient regional transit services.
The RRTS trains, resembling conventional metro trains but offering a host of passenger-centric amenities such as luggage carriers and miniature screens within the coaches, are poised to redefine the standards of modern Indian commuting.
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has been entrusted with the monumental task of overseeing the construction and operation of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System, bridging the route between Delhi and Meerut.
The entire 82.15-kilometer Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is slated for full operational functionality by June 2025. This expansive project will not only introduce swift and safe transportation but also contribute to the reduction of congestion and air pollution in the National Capital Region.
Notably, the RRTS initiative places a strong focus on gender diversity, as it boasts a higher proportion of female staff compared to their male counterparts. Women are set to play a significant role in the operation of RAPIDX, symbolizing a progressive stride in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
The importance of this initiative extends beyond technological advancement; it embodies a new vision for modern India, showcasing the nation’s commitment to women’s empowerment and gender equality. The inclusion of women employees in key positions such as train operators, station control, management, and customer care underscores a transformative shift within the transport sector.
To prepare these operators for their roles in this cutting-edge urban transport system, a rigorous three-month training program was conducted. It encompassed various aspects, from driving the trains to controlling speed on simulators. Additionally, the training delved into the unique features of the RRTS system, including the world’s first implementation of the ETCS Level-2 signaling system.
Operating these RAPIDX trains, which can reach speeds of up to 160 km per hour, presents an exciting challenge for these pioneering women operators. Their diligent efforts in preparing for the operation of this system have earned them high praise, and they have demonstrated exceptional competence and dedication throughout the process.
As these women become integral contributors to this pioneering project, they carry the pride and responsibility of ensuring a safe and successful journey for passengers. Their families, too, share in this sense of pride and responsibility, as they support and celebrate their remarkable achievements.
The launch of operations in the priority section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is poised to offer fast, safe, and comfortable regional transit services to commuters in the National Capital Region. The corridor is set to transform the region’s connectivity, offering opportunities for employment, business, and education, all while fostering multi-centric and balanced development.
RAPIDX, with its high-speed service, stands as a symbol of India’s commitment to advancing public transportation and reducing congestion and air pollution, thereby contributing to a sustainable and cleaner environment for all.
