CSMT Railway Station Undergoes Massive ₹2450 Crores Upgrade: A Fusion of Modernity and Heritage
In a significant development, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Railway Station is undergoing a major transformation with a whopping investment of ₹2450 crores. This ambitious project aims to elevate the station into a transportation and heritage hub, seamlessly blending modern infrastructure with its historical significance.
Scope of Work: The project encompasses the construction of various passenger-related facilities, including retail buildings, parcel buildings, and Mechanical Department structures. It involves the development of long-distance and suburban nodes, concourses, foot over bridges (FOBs), skywalks, roof refurbishment, circulating area enhancement, heritage building restoration, landscaping, art installations, ballastless tracks, and boundary walls. Additionally, plans include the construction of a DRM complex (G+4), rest houses (G+2), and a new headquarters for Central Railway at the Heritage Node (G+4).
Current Status: The project has already achieved several milestones, with the completion of site office setup, drone survey, GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) survey, hard barricading work, soil investigation, and mobilization of site works. Topographical survey, aerial survey, and GTI (Geotechnical Testing & Inspection) in circulating areas near Platform no. 18 have also been successfully completed. Inventory details for various buildings are currently being compiled, while shore piling work, utility surveys, temporary office shifting, and support activities at Wadibunder are in progress.
Area Statement: The development at CSMT will cover a total area of 4,61,534 sq meters, including 2,79,507 sq meters for new construction, 1,30,912 sq meters for refurbishment, 37,703 sq meters for circulation areas, and 13,412 sq meters for landscaping.
Ongoing Activities: Several activities are already underway, including the finalization of the Master Layout (with 21% barricading completion in LD Node Area), setting up a batching plant at CSMT and Wadibunder, and the establishment of modular permanent site offices (90% completion). Shore piling in DRM Complex Area is at 75% completion, and the construction of a temporary parcel office near Platform No. 18 is progressing with the shifting of utilities.
