SAIL Demonstrates AatmaNirbharta in Defense Sector: Supplies 4000 Tonnes of Special Steel for Indigenous Frigate Ship “Vindhyagiri”

Reinforcing Indigenous Defense Commitment, SAIL's Contribution Crucial for Project P17A Frigate

New Delhi, August 16, 2023: Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), in a resounding affirmation of its commitment to bolstering national defense capabilities, has played a pivotal role in fortifying India’s indigenous sixth frigate ship, “Vindhyagiri”. Underlining the spirit of AatmaNirbharta (self-reliance) in the defense sector, SAIL has supplied the complete 4000 Tonnes of Special Steel required for the frigate, a cornerstone of the Project P17A initiative led by the Indian Navy. The ship’s construction is being executed by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE). The ceremonial launch of the frigate, scheduled for August 17, 2023, is set to be graced by the presence of Droupadi Murmu, President of India.

The Backbone of the “Vindhyagiri”

The Special Steel, a vital component for the successful construction of the “Vindhyagiri” frigate, comprises DMR 249 A grade Hot Rolled (HR) Sheets and Plates. This steel infusion accentuates the robustness and indigenous essence of the ship, encapsulating the innovative strides made in India’s naval capabilities.

Steering the Course of Indigenous Defense

Project P17A, an ambitious venture entailing the construction of seven advanced ships, has reached a milestone with the impending launch of the “Vindhyagiri” frigate, marking the culmination of the sixth ship in the series. SAIL’s unwavering involvement in this strategic initiative exemplifies its dedication to nurturing indigenous prowess and innovation within India’s defense sector. This endeavor aligns perfectly with the nation’s vision of self-reliance and technological prowess.

A Legacy of Contribution

SAIL’s contribution to India’s defense is not limited to the “Vindhyagiri” frigate; it extends to the monumental achievement of INS Vikrant as well. Having provided the entire 30,000 Tonnes of specialty steel essential for the construction of the prestigious aircraft carrier, SAIL continues to stand as a pillar of strength in fortifying the nation’s naval and defense capabilities.

As the “Vindhyagiri” prepares to set sail into the maritime horizon, it carries with it not only the aspirations of self-sufficiency but also the remarkable collaboration between SAIL, GRSE, and the Indian Navy in creating a new era of indigenous defense prowess.
