Prime Minister Modi Holds Bilateral Meeting with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at G20 Summit

New Delhi, India – September 9, 2023 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a significant bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi. This meeting holds special significance as it marks Prime Minister Sunak’s inaugural visit to India since assuming office in October 2022.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude for the United Kingdom’s unwavering support throughout India’s G20 Presidency. The UK’s active participation in various G20 meetings and events was noted with appreciation by Prime Minister Modi.

Both leaders expressed immense satisfaction with the strides made in several domains of bilateral collaboration, in line with the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Roadmap 2030. These areas encompassed the economy, defense and security, technology, green technology, climate change, health, and mobility sectors. The discussions also extended to pressing international and regional issues of shared significance.

One key highlight of the meeting was the review of progress in the negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both leaders voiced their optimism that the remaining issues can be promptly addressed, paving the way for a balanced, mutually advantageous, and forward-looking FTA.

Prime Minister Modi extended a cordial invitation to Prime Minister Sunak for a bilateral visit at a mutually convenient date in the near future, offering the opportunity for a more comprehensive discussion. In response, Prime Minister Sunak graciously accepted the invitation and commended Prime Minister Modi for the successful culmination of the G20 Summit.
