JICA Extends Congratulations on India’s 77th Independence Day, Reinforces Dedication to Inclusive Socio-Economic Growth

New Delhi, August 11, 2023: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) takes this opportunity to celebrate India’s 77th year of Independence, highlighting its steadfast commitment to fostering comprehensive development and contributing to India’s onward march. JICA India stands proud, emphasizing its unwavering dedication to realizing an inclusive and progressive future. In the midst of India’s leadership in the G20 Summit of 2023, JICA is enthusiastic about strengthening bilateral cooperation, jointly addressing global challenges, and cultivating an international community marked by peace, stability, and prosperity.

The cooperative partnership between JICA and India spans a wide spectrum, encompassing technical collaboration, loans, grants, and various other channels. Through this all-encompassing approach, significant advancements have taken root across vital sectors such as transportation, water resources, sanitation, energy, forestry, agriculture, healthcare, and education. JICA reiterates its unswerving commitment to furthering its support to India, effectively shaping a prosperous destiny for both nations and the global arena.

Reflecting on the occasion, SAITO Mitsunori, Chief Representative of JICA India Office, stated, “As a prominent global democracy, India has etched its presence onto the international stage. Japan stands shoulder to shoulder with India, serving as a reliable partner on its path to a sustainable and secure future. Allow me to reaffirm JICA’s resolute commitment to assisting India in its pursuit of socio-economic growth. This year holds paramount significance for Japan and India, as they respectively hold the G7 and G20 presidencies, collaborating extensively across international sectors. This presents an opportune moment to further reinforce and enhance our already thriving bilateral cooperation. It’s an ideal juncture to collaborate within multilateral frameworks, focusing on areas like circular economy, resource efficiency, low carbon technology, and green hydrogen, among others. During the fiscal year 2022-23, JICA India achieved a significant milestone by achieving its highest-ever loan signing amount of 567,487 million JPY, showcasing its dedication to India’s progress. This accomplishment was marked by the signing of loans for projects including the Patna Metro Rail Construction Project (I), The Project for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation for Climate Change Response in West Bengal, Rajasthan Water Sector Livelihood Improvement Project (II), and Project for the Construction of Mumbai – Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (IV). Building upon the triumphs of the previous year, JICA is poised to complete several substantial ongoing projects in the fiscal year 2023-24. Notable endeavors include the INR 1,927 crore ODA loan extended to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project (III) in Maharashtra, the NH208 Kailashahar-Khowai road as part of the Northeast Connectivity Improvement Project in Tripura, the Tamil Nadu Urban Health Improvement Project, Project for Development of Intelligent Transport System in Bengaluru, and the Bihar National Highway Improvement Project. The realm of education continues to be a focal point, with various initiatives underway at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) nearing fruition.
