Indian Railways to Revolutionize Platform Lighting with IoT for Energy Savings

Indian Railways is embarking on a groundbreaking transformation of its platform lighting systems by harnessing the power of the Internet of Things (IoT). This strategic initiative is designed to achieve substantial electricity consumption savings at railway platforms across the nation.

With an extensive network of 7,349 stations, accommodating 13,169 passenger trains and 8,479 freight trains, Indian Railways serves a staggering 23 million passengers and transports 3 million tons of freight daily, making platform lighting an essential aspect of its operations.

The introduction of IoT technology allows for the creation of connected lighting systems, fostering seamless communication, context-aware services, and data exchange among various devices and elements. The implementation of IoT technology opens the door to a plethora of resource-saving tools, including intelligent lights, sensors, gateways, and more. These devices are seamlessly integrated into the platform, enabling remote control and data collection through regular internet services and high-speed networks.

The potential of IoT-powered lighting systems extends beyond mere energy savings. These systems are poised to generate valuable light-based data for lighting control while also benefiting various sectors, such as building management, healthcare, communication, and horticulture.

Manufacturers are now offering IoT-enabled lighting products, equipped with connectivity, intelligent sensors, and advanced data communication capabilities. These solutions redefine lighting’s role within the IoT ecosystem.

Furthermore, IoT-enabled lighting systems, sometimes referred to as networked or smart lighting systems, are expected to feature integrated sensors that can detect factors like CO2 levels, infrared presence, and radar information. This transformative innovation promises to enhance energy efficiency and bolster the infrastructure of Indian Railways, ultimately advancing the organization’s sustainability goals.
