Bureau of Indian Standards Strengthens Collaboration with 35 Institutions for Standardization and Conformity Assessment
MoUs Signed with Prestigious Institutions to Enhance India's Standards Formulation Activities
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National Standards Body, took a significant stride towards fostering collaboration in standardization and conformity assessment by signing Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with 35 prestigious institutions across the country. The partners include renowned NITs, Government, and Private Engineering colleges from various states.
The MoUs open up new avenues for the partner institutions to actively engage in standardization activities by joining the technical committees of BIS at the national and international level. Additionally, they will receive infrastructure support for relevant R&D projects, have the opportunity to co-organize events on Standardization and Conformity Assessment, exchange publications, introduce standardization curricula in academics, explore the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Standardization, testing, and Conformity Assessment, and share laboratory facilities.
Speaking at the event, Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director-General of BIS, highlighted the significance of these MoUs in enriching the standards formulation activities in India. He stressed the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and BIS in driving progress in various industries and promoting consumer protection.
Chandan Bahl, Deputy Director-General of BIS, provided detailed insights into the program’s framework and future trajectory, emphasizing the potential of this partnership to strengthen India’s standardization landscape.
BIS, operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, plays a crucial role in various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts, and Laboratory Services. These initiatives aim to benefit the industry while ensuring consumer protection. The recent collaboration with esteemed academic institutions is expected to contribute significantly to the nation’s pursuit of excellence in standardization and conformity assessment.
