Flash Floods Hit North Sikkim Following Sudden Cloud Burst

A sudden cloud burst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim has triggered a devastating flash flood in the Teesta River, impacting the picturesque Lachen valley. The unfolding situation has led to significant concerns, especially for army establishments situated in the region. Efforts are currently underway to ascertain the full extent of the damage.

The flash flood crisis was exacerbated by the release of water from the Chungthang dam, resulting in a rapid and alarming surge in water levels downstream, reaching heights of up to 15-20 feet. This surge has had severe repercussions, particularly in Bardang near Singtam, where multiple army vehicles have been severely affected.

As the situation unfolds, reports indicate that 23 military personnel are currently missing, and several vehicles are believed to be submerged beneath the slush. Intensive search and rescue operations have been launched to locate and provide assistance to those affected.

The Public Relations Office of Defence, Guwahati, has been actively monitoring the evolving situation, coordinating response efforts, and ensuring that all available resources are deployed to address the crisis.

This flash flood incident underscores the unpredictable and hazardous nature of weather events in the region, emphasizing the need for swift and effective response measures to safeguard lives and property. Authorities are working diligently to manage the crisis and provide support to those affected by these unfortunate circumstances.
