Standard Kavach Commissioned on Agra Cantt–Dholpur Rail Section

52.46-km section equipped with 720 RFID tags to strengthen train safety

Indian Railways has achieved another milestone in strengthening train safety with the successful commissioning of the Standard Kavach Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system on the 52.46-kilometre Agra Cantt–Dholpur rail section of North Central Railway’s Agra Division. The Kavach system was commissioned on September 24, 2026.

As part of the project, a total of 720 RFID tags have been installed across the section. These tags form an important component of the Kavach system, providing train-positioning and operational information required for the functioning of the safety system.

The commissioning was achieved by the Project Unit, Agra, under the guidance of North Central Railway General Manager Naresh Pal Singh and the leadership of Deepak Kumar Sinha, Principal Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer (PCSTE), North Central Railway. The project was also implemented under the guidance of Gagan Goyal, Divisional Railway Manager, Agra, as part of efforts to strengthen railway safety through modern and indigenous technologies.

The Agra Cantt–Dholpur section is an important rail corridor in the region, and the commissioning of Kavach is expected to enhance the safety and reliability of train operations on the route. The deployment is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to expand indigenous automatic train protection technology across its network.

Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system designed to provide additional safety support to locomotive pilots and help prevent accidents arising from certain human errors or operational situations. The system can assist in monitoring train movement and controlling speed when required, thereby providing an additional layer of protection during train operations.

The Standard Kavach system provides several important safety features. These include protection against head-on collisions, where two trains could potentially approach each other on the same track, as well as protection against rear-end collisions. The system also provides protection against roll-away situations, in which a stationary train or locomotive may begin moving unintentionally.

Another important feature is standstill protection, which helps ensure that a train remains stationary under specified operational conditions. Together, these features are intended to support safer train operations and reduce the risks associated with human error.

The installation of 720 RFID tags along the 52.46-km section is an important part of the technical infrastructure required for Kavach. The tags communicate location-related information to support the system’s functioning and enable it to respond appropriately to train movement and operational conditions.

The successful commissioning involved coordinated efforts by the Signal and Telecommunication Department, Project Unit Agra, along with officers, engineers, technical teams and other railway employees associated with the project. The system was commissioned after implementation in accordance with prescribed safety and technical requirements.

North Central Railway has been undertaking the deployment of modern safety technologies across its network as part of efforts to improve railway operations. The commissioning of Standard Kavach between Agra Cantt and Dholpur adds another equipped section to the railway network and strengthens the technological infrastructure available for train protection.

The development also reflects the increasing use of indigenous railway safety technologies developed for Indian operating conditions. With Kavach being progressively deployed on identified routes and sections, Indian Railways is working towards creating additional technological safeguards for train operations.

The Agra Division and North Central Railway stated that the commissioning represents an important step towards enhancing the safety and reliability of train services on the Agra Cantt–Dholpur section. The railway administration continues to focus on the adoption of modern technologies and safety systems aimed at providing passengers with a safer and more reliable rail travel experience.
