₹166.5 Crore Four-Lane ROB Approved at Alkapuri in Vadodara

Indian Railways has approved the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in Vadodara Division of Western Railway, at an estimated cost of ₹166.5 crore. The project will be implemented on a cost-sharing basis between Indian Railways and the State Government, with each side bearing approximately ₹83.2769 crore.

The proposed grade-separated road facility is aimed at augmenting existing road connectivity in the Alkapuri area and addressing traffic constraints associated with the existing road crossing near Vadodara Railway Station.

Existing RUB Faces Capacity and Clearance Constraints

The existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB) provides an important east-west road connection between the Alkapuri and Kalaghoda areas of Vadodara city.

However, the existing facility has a vertical clearance of only around 3 metres, which restricts the movement of larger vehicles. The RUB also experiences recurring waterlogging during the monsoon season.

These limitations have contributed to traffic congestion and inconvenience for road users, while also affecting the overall functionality of the existing crossing arrangement.

The proposed four-lane ROB is intended to augment the capacity of the road connection and provide a more effective grade-separated crossing facility.

Four-Lane Facility to Improve Road Connectivity

The new ROB will provide an alternative road crossing arrangement while avoiding interference with railway operations.

The proposed facility is expected to strengthen road connectivity in an important part of Vadodara and improve access around the railway station area.

The project will also provide connectivity to several major transport facilities, including Vadodara Railway Station, the GSRTC Bus Station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Station.

By providing a grade-separated road facility, the project is aimed at improving movement between important parts of the city and reducing the functional limitations associated with the existing RUB.

Traffic Demand Highlights Need for New Facility

Traffic assessment for the area has indicated peak-hour traffic of more than 1,600 Passenger Car Units (PCU) per hour.

The existing road arrangement also has multiple traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian facilities.

According to the project details, these factors have contributed to the existing RUB becoming inadequate for present and projected traffic requirements.

The proposed four-lane ROB is therefore planned to provide additional road capacity and a more effective crossing arrangement for the growing traffic demand in the area.

Equal Cost Sharing Between Railway and State Government

The total estimated project cost of ₹166.5 crore will be shared equally between Indian Railways and the State Government.

The Railway share will be approximately ₹83.2769 crore, while the State Government will contribute an equivalent amount.

The cost-sharing arrangement will facilitate the development of the grade-separated road infrastructure while addressing a road connectivity issue located close to an important railway station.

Boost to Vadodara Transport Connectivity

The Alkapuri ROB is expected to strengthen connectivity around Vadodara Railway Station and improve access to other major transport facilities in the surrounding area.

The project also comes in the context of growing traffic requirements and the need to improve road infrastructure around key railway and transport nodes.

With four lanes and grade-separated connectivity, the proposed ROB is intended to address the limitations of the existing Alkapuri RUB, particularly its restricted vertical clearance, waterlogging issues and limited capacity.

The project will thus provide an upgraded road crossing facility while supporting connectivity between Alkapuri, Kalaghoda and other important areas of Vadodara.

The approval of the ₹166.5-crore project marks a significant step towards strengthening road infrastructure around Vadodara’s railway and transport facilities. Once developed, the four-lane ROB will augment existing connectivity and provide an improved crossing arrangement to meet present and future traffic requirements.
