RVNL Achieves Major Tunnel Breakthrough on Rishikesh-Karnprayag Rail Project

A major engineering milestone has been achieved on the Rishikesh-Karnprayag New Broad Gauge Rail Line Project in Uttarakhand, with the final breakthrough of Escape Tunnel-1 on September 11, 2026. The breakthrough marks the 41st tunnel breakthrough of the prestigious Himalayan railway project and brings the project closer to completion.
Nishid Sharma, Project Manager for Package-I of Max Infra Projects under Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), said the tunnel between Rishikesh-Dhalwala and Shivpuri is an escape tunnel, designed to provide a safe route for evacuation during emergencies.
According to Sharma, Escape Tunnel-1 is approximately 10.847 kilometres long and has now been excavated completely from one end to the other. With its final breakthrough, the entire escape tunnel has been connected, making it the second-longest tunnel of the project.
The development is particularly significant because excavation was carried out through some of the most challenging geological conditions in the Himalayan region. The tunnel alignment passes through highly tectonised, multi-folded and extensively faulted rock formations, with widespread shearing and locally severe rock crushing.
The difficult geology also resulted in the formation of thick mylonite zones, particularly in areas influenced by the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT). Such geological conditions present major challenges during tunnelling, requiring continuous assessment, specialised excavation techniques and stringent safety measures.
While the escape tunnel has already achieved its final breakthrough, work on the main railway tunnel, through which trains will eventually operate, is progressing separately. Sharma said the breakthrough of the main tunnel is expected in approximately four months.
The latest breakthrough represents an important achievement for RVNL’s Rishikesh Project Implementation Unit and the agencies involved in construction. Successfully excavating the complete 10.847-km escape tunnel through complex Himalayan geology reflects the technical capability, coordination and perseverance of the engineering teams working on the project.
The Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project is one of India’s most challenging railway infrastructure initiatives, involving extensive tunnelling and bridge construction through difficult mountainous terrain. The railway line is being developed to improve connectivity to the Garhwal region and provide a more efficient rail link towards important pilgrimage and tourism destinations in Uttarakhand.
With 41 tunnel breakthroughs now completed, the project has entered another significant phase of construction. According to the project update, only five breakthroughs remain, and these are expected to be achieved within the next year.
The completion of Escape Tunnel-1 therefore marks more than just another construction milestone. It demonstrates continued progress in building railway infrastructure through the Himalayas, where difficult terrain and unpredictable geological conditions make tunnelling a particularly demanding engineering task.
The project is steadily moving towards its ultimate objective of bringing railway connectivity deeper into the Himalayan region. Each completed tunnel brings the Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line one step closer to operationalisation and is expected to strengthen connectivity, accessibility and economic opportunities across Uttarakhand.
