Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates Kailaras-Birpur Rail Section, Boosting Gwalior-Chambal Connectivity

The Gwalior-Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh has received a major railway connectivity boost with the inauguration of the 56-km Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur gauge-converted rail section. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, virtually inaugurated the section on Tuesday and flagged off the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service up to Birpur.

The new rail connectivity is expected to improve passenger movement across Morena and Sheopur districts while opening better access to education, healthcare, employment and markets. According to the Railway Ministry, residents of more than 100 villages across the region will benefit from the gauge conversion.

Gwalior-Kailaras Train Extended to Birpur

The extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service to Birpur will provide direct rail connectivity between Gwalior, Kailaras, Sabalgarh, Vijaypur and Birpur. The service is particularly significant for people living in rural and tribal areas, who will now have a more affordable and convenient mode of transportation.

The improved connectivity is also expected to support local trade and regional economic activity by facilitating the movement of people and goods and providing better access to larger urban centres.

Addressing the programme, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the commissioning of the 56-km Kailaras-Birpur section as a significant milestone for the Gwalior-Chambal region.

He said the project had been completed through the coordinated efforts of various stakeholders and would benefit people across Bamor, Joura, Kailaras and Sabalgarh tehsils of Morena district, as well as Birpur, Sheopur and Karahal tehsils of Sheopur district.

Gwalior-Sheopur Rail Link Moving Towards Completion

The Kailaras-Birpur section forms part of the broader 117-km Birlanagar-Birpur rail corridor, which has witnessed rapid progress over the past few years.

The sections of the corridor have been progressively opened for passenger traffic since 2023.

Section Length Opened for Passenger Traffic
Birlanagar–Rayaru 11 km May 2023
Rayaru–Sumaoli 22 km August 2023
Sumaoli–Joura 14 km November 2023
Joura–Kailaras 14 km February 2024
Kailaras–Sabalgarh 29 km 2025
Sabalgarh–Birpur 27 km 2026

The Railway Minister said work on the 37-km Birpur-Seroni Road and 33-km Seroni Road-Sheopur Kalan sections is almost complete.

Vaishnaw expressed confidence that the entire Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan railway line would be completed and opened to the public within the next few months.

The planned extension to Sheopur Kalan and, subsequently, towards Kota, is expected to provide the Gwalior-Chambal region with stronger links to major educational, industrial and commercial centres.

Railway Connectivity to Drive Regional Development

The new rail link is expected to have implications beyond passenger transportation. Improved railway access can strengthen local markets, facilitate movement of workers and students and make healthcare and educational institutions in larger cities more accessible.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia described the development as a historic milestone for the Gwalior-Chambal region. He said the railway line should be viewed not merely as a transportation facility but as an infrastructure link capable of improving access to modern services and creating new economic opportunities.

Scindia said the railway journey, which previously extended through Gwalior, Bamore, Sumaoli, Joura and Kailaras, has now reached Birpur and is expected to move further towards Sheopur and ultimately Kota.

He also highlighted the potential impact on communities in Kailaras, Sabalgarh, Rampahadi, Vijaypur and Birpur. According to him, the Kailaras section currently provides transportation facilities to around 10,000 people daily, while the extension to Birpur will expand the railway network’s reach to a larger population.

Madhya Pradesh Railway Budget Rises Nearly 24 Times

The expansion of the Gwalior-Chambal rail network comes amid a substantial increase in railway investment in Madhya Pradesh.

Vaishnaw said the railway budgetary allocation for Madhya Pradesh has increased from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27, representing an increase of nearly 24 times.

Indicator Earlier Period 2026-27 / Current
Madhya Pradesh Railway Budget ₹632 crore (2009-14) ₹15,188 crore
Railway Projects Underway Around ₹1.55 lakh crore
Stations Being Redeveloped 80
Vande Bharat Trains 5
Amrit Bharat Trains 7
Railway Personnel Recruited Since 2014 Over 5.54 lakh

The Railway Minister said railway projects worth approximately ₹1.55 lakh crore are currently underway in Madhya Pradesh.

The state is also witnessing the redevelopment of 80 railway stations, while five Vande Bharat trains and seven Amrit Bharat trains are operating in or connecting the state.

Several major infrastructure projects have also been taken up, including the Manmad-Indore new railway line and multiple third- and fourth-line projects.

Vaishnaw said railway projects connected with Madhya Pradesh and approved during the third term of the incumbent government amount to approximately ₹64,512 crore.

Over 5.54 Lakh Railway Jobs Since 2014

Highlighting employment generation within Indian Railways, Vaishnaw said more than 5.54 lakh people have been recruited by Indian Railways since 2014.

He also underlined railway electrification and modernisation as key government priorities. According to the minister, electrification has reduced Indian Railways’ dependence on diesel and helped lower expenditure on imported fuel.

The expansion of railway infrastructure, along with electrification and additional tracks, is aimed at improving operational efficiency and supporting growing passenger and freight demand.

Gwalior-Chambal-Malwa Connectivity to Strengthen

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said railway expansion would create new opportunities for the Gwalior-Chambal region and strengthen its connection with other parts of the state, including the Malwa region.

He said projects such as the Indore-Manmad new railway line would open new routes and improve regional connectivity.

Yadav also linked improved railway infrastructure with industrial development and employment generation. He highlighted the potential of the Gwalior-Chambal region in emerging sectors such as battery energy storage, footwear, hydrogen manufacturing and tourism.

According to the Chief Minister, better rail connectivity could support these sectors by improving the movement of people, raw materials and finished products while making tourist destinations more accessible.

He also highlighted ongoing doubling, tripling and quadrupling of railway lines across Madhya Pradesh, which is expected to further enhance rail capacity.

Rail Expansion to Create New Development Corridor

The Kailaras-Birpur gauge conversion represents an important step in the gradual expansion of railway connectivity across the Gwalior-Chambal region. With the next sections towards Sheopur Kalan nearing completion and the longer-term plan to connect the corridor with Kota, the project is expected to create a broader east-west rail connection for the region.

The combination of new rail links, additional tracks, station redevelopment and modern train services could significantly improve mobility and support economic activity across Madhya Pradesh.

The programme was attended by Narendra Singh Tomar, Speaker of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, and Shivmangal Singh Tomar, Member of Parliament from Morena, among other dignitaries.

With the commissioning of the Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur section, the Gwalior-Chambal region has taken another step towards a more integrated railway network, with further connectivity to Sheopur Kalan and Kota expected to expand its economic and social linkages in the coming months.
