Indian Railways Approves ₹220 Crore Electric Traction Upgrade on Wadi–Raichur Section to Boost High-Density Rail Capacity

In a major push to strengthen railway infrastructure and improve operational efficiency on one of India’s busiest rail corridors, Indian Railways has approved a ₹220 crore project to upgrade the electric traction system on the Wadi–Raichur section of South Central Railway. The project involves converting the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a 2×25 kV system over a 102 route kilometre (204 track kilometre) double-line section, significantly enhancing the corridor’s capacity to handle growing passenger and freight traffic.
The project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernise its core infrastructure, increase network capacity and improve the efficiency of operations on high-density routes across the country. The upgraded traction system is expected to provide a stronger and more reliable power supply for train operations, enabling the railway network to support higher traffic volumes in the years ahead.
The Wadi–Raichur section is an important segment of High Density Network (HDN) Route-7, one of the country’s most strategic railway corridors. The route connects major cities including Mumbai, Pune, Wadi, Raichur, Guntakal, Kadapa, Renigunta and Chennai, serving as a crucial link for both passenger movement and freight transportation between western and southern India.
With passenger demand and freight movement increasing steadily, railway authorities have been focusing on strengthening infrastructure along this corridor. The transition to the 2×25 kV electric traction system is expected to significantly improve the section’s capability to support heavier train loads, higher traffic density and more reliable operations.
The existing 1×25 kV system has served the railway network effectively for decades. However, as train frequencies increase and more high-powered electric locomotives operate on the route, the need for a more robust traction system has become essential. The 2×25 kV technology provides improved voltage regulation, reduces transmission losses and enables more efficient distribution of electrical power over longer distances.
Railway officials said the upgraded system will help maintain consistent power supply to trains, particularly on heavily utilised sections where multiple trains operate simultaneously. The enhanced traction infrastructure is expected to reduce voltage drops, improve locomotive performance and support smoother train operations across the corridor.
The project will also play an important role in supporting Indian Railways’ expanding freight operations. The Wadi–Raichur section is a key freight artery carrying commodities such as coal, cement, steel, fertilisers, food grains and other industrial goods. Strengthening the electric traction system will improve the corridor’s ability to accommodate longer and heavier freight trains while ensuring reliable operations.
Passenger services are also expected to benefit from the infrastructure upgrade. Improved power availability and enhanced operational reliability will contribute to better punctuality, reduced operational constraints and smoother movement of trains on this busy section.
The traction upgradation aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing infrastructure modernisation programme, which focuses on increasing line capacity, improving signalling systems, enhancing electrification and deploying advanced technologies to create a future-ready railway network. Similar upgrades are being undertaken across several high-density routes to support rising transportation demand and improve overall network efficiency.
Officials noted that strengthening traction infrastructure is a critical component of railway modernisation, particularly as Indian Railways continues to expand electrified operations and introduce more powerful electric locomotives capable of hauling heavier passenger and freight trains.
The project also supports the national objective of promoting energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable rail transportation. A stronger electric traction system will enable more efficient utilisation of electric locomotives, reduce operational bottlenecks and contribute to lower energy losses during train operations.
Once completed, the upgraded 2×25 kV electric traction system will significantly enhance the capacity and reliability of the Wadi–Raichur section, enabling Indian Railways to meet future traffic requirements while ensuring safer, faster and more efficient train operations.
The approval of the ₹220 crore project underscores Indian Railways’ continued commitment to investing in critical infrastructure, strengthening high-density corridors and building a modern railway network capable of supporting India’s growing passenger and freight transportation needs. The initiative is expected to play a vital role in improving operational efficiency, increasing carrying capacity and reinforcing one of the country’s most important rail corridors connecting western and southern India.
