Jaipur Gets a Second Major Rail Hub as Khatipura Station Develops into Mega Terminal

Jaipur city is set to witness the rise of another major railway station on the lines of the busy Jaipur Junction, as Khatipura railway station is being transformed into a fully self-reliant mega terminal station. The ambitious project aims to significantly enhance train handling capacity, passenger convenience, and maintenance infrastructure in the Rajasthan capital.
Khatipura, currently functioning as a suburban railway station, is being redeveloped as a satellite terminal to reduce pressure on Jaipur Junction and create additional capacity for future rail operations. Once completed, the station is expected to emerge as a modern railway hub equipped with advanced passenger amenities and world-class train maintenance facilities.
Railway officials said the redevelopment of Khatipura would not only improve the movement of trains within Jaipur but also open new possibilities for launching services on major routes, especially towards the Delhi corridor and other long-distance destinations.
Major Boost to Jaipur’s Rail Infrastructure
The Khatipura project is being designed as a complete terminal with facilities for train stabling, maintenance, washing, inspection, and repairs. Additional stabling lines have already been developed for parking trains after operations, ensuring smoother management of railway traffic.
At present, Khatipura station has six high-level platforms along with eight railway lines. Since all platforms are high-level, passengers—including women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities—will find it easier to board and alight from trains.
The presence of multiple lines alongside the platforms is also expected to eliminate crossing-related delays, improving punctuality and operational efficiency.
₹205 Crore Coach Care Complex Under Construction
One of the most significant parts of the project is the construction of a Coach Care Complex at an estimated cost of ₹205 crore. The facility will serve as a centralised maintenance hub for all major types of train rakes, including:
- Vande Bharat trains
- LHB coaches
- DEMU trains
- DMU rakes
- Other conventional passenger coaches
The complex is expected to allow multiple categories of trains to undergo maintenance at a single location, reducing dependence on other workshops and depots.
Advanced Maintenance Facilities
Railways are equipping the Coach Care Complex with several modern technologies and machines, including:
- Automatic coach washing plant
- Computerised wheel profile management system
- Synchronized electrically operated lifting jacks
- Coach lifting units
- Water recycling plant
- High-capacity cranes
- Motor-driven winching machines
These systems will help in faster and more efficient maintenance operations. Railway authorities said coaches will no longer need to be sent elsewhere for many routine and heavy repair jobs.
Separate Lines for Repairs and Operations
Towards the Jaipur side of the station, five separate lines are being developed for:
- Washing and testing
- Technical inspection
- Heavy repairs
- Bogie repairs
- Drop pit and jack pit operations
In addition, three separate spur/shunting lines are also being built.
Towards the Dausa side, another two dedicated spur/shunting lines are under development, along with two extra lines for locomotive replacement, stabling, and water filling operations.
Further, four more lines are being laid for wheel lathe shed work, charging, and associated technical tasks.
New Buildings Coming Up
The project also includes the construction of multiple new buildings to support station operations and staff requirements. These include:
- A two-storey linen maintenance building
- A three-storey administrative block
- Yard Master office
- Other operational offices and utility structures
These facilities are expected to strengthen management efficiency and improve service standards.
Alternative to Jaipur Junction
Once operational as a satellite terminal, Khatipura is likely to become a strategic alternative to Jaipur Junction, one of Rajasthan’s busiest railway stations. Jaipur Junction currently handles a heavy volume of passenger traffic and train movement. By diverting some train services to Khatipura, congestion at the main station can be reduced considerably.
Railway planners believe that Khatipura’s emergence as a second major terminal will create room for introducing additional trains, especially new intercity and long-distance services.
Future Ready Rail Hub
The redevelopment of Khatipura reflects Indian Railways’ broader push to modernize urban railway infrastructure and create future-ready transport hubs in growing cities. With modern maintenance systems, expanded yard capacity, passenger-friendly platforms, and room for new train services, Khatipura is expected to play a key role in Jaipur’s transport network in the coming years.
As construction progresses, Jaipur residents may soon have a second railway gateway comparable in importance to Jaipur Junction—marking a major milestone in the city’s railway expansion journey.
