Indian Railways Sanctions ₹850 Crore Track Renewal Projects in Rajasthan to Boost Safety and Connectivity

Indian Railways has sanctioned track renewal works worth ₹850 crore on two key rail sections in Rajasthan, reaffirming its focus on strengthening rail infrastructure, enhancing safety standards, and ensuring reliable train operations across the network. The projects are part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise ageing assets and improve long-term performance on strategically important routes.

Regular track renewal is a critical component of railway safety and operational efficiency. Over time, tracks experience wear and tear due to heavy axle loads, high traffic density, and extreme weather conditions. By undertaking systematic renewals using modern materials and technology, Indian Railways aims to minimise derailment risks, improve ride quality, and support higher operating speeds.

The sanctioned works cover two vital rail corridors that play an important role in passenger movement, tourism, and regional connectivity in western Rajasthan. The first section identified for renewal is the Rai Ka Bagh–Phalodi–Jaisalmer route, which spans a total length of 291.126 kilometres. This route is of immense strategic and economic significance, as it connects Jodhpur region with the desert city of Jaisalmer, a major tourist destination and a key location from a strategic standpoint.

Track renewal on the Rai Ka Bagh–Phalodi–Jaisalmer section is expected to substantially improve track quality and reliability. The route caters to long-distance passenger trains, tourist traffic, and essential freight services, and upgraded infrastructure will ensure smoother and safer train movement. Improved track conditions will also reduce maintenance requirements and enhance punctuality of train services on this busy corridor.

The second section approved for renewal is the Lalgarh–Kolayat–Phalodi route, covering approximately 73.742 kilometres. Though shorter in length, this section is equally important for operational efficiency and regional connectivity. The route serves as a crucial link within the desert region, facilitating passenger travel and supporting local economic activities.

Renewal works on the Lalgarh–Kolayat–Phalodi section will significantly enhance operational performance by strengthening the track structure and enabling more stable and reliable train operations. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to reduce speed restrictions imposed due to track condition and improve overall line capacity.

As part of the sanctioned projects, Indian Railways will deploy modern 60 kg rails along with 60 kg pre-stressed concrete (PSC) sleepers. These high-capacity rails and sleepers offer greater strength, durability, and resilience compared to older track components. The use of heavier rails and PSC sleepers helps in better load distribution, reduced track deformation, and longer service life, making the tracks suitable for higher speeds and heavier traffic.

The adoption of modern track components will also contribute to improved passenger comfort by ensuring smoother rides and reduced vibrations. For train operations, stronger tracks translate into enhanced safety margins and lower chances of track-related failures.

The total estimated cost of the track renewal works on the two sections is ₹850 crore. This investment is aimed at improving long-term track performance, reducing recurring maintenance costs, and enhancing overall safety. The projects are expected to be executed in a phased manner to minimise disruption to train services while ensuring timely completion.

Railway officials said that the sanctioned works underline Indian Railways’ commitment to continuous infrastructure upgradation, especially in regions with challenging terrain and climatic conditions such as Rajasthan. Extreme temperatures and sandy environments can accelerate track wear, making timely renewals essential for safe and efficient operations.

With these projects, Indian Railways continues to prioritise passenger safety, infrastructure quality, and travel comfort, while also supporting tourism and regional development.
