Konkan Railway Deploys Second High-Capacity Ro-Ro Rake to Boost Freight Movement

Konkan Railway has introduced its second Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) rake with an enhanced 57-ton truck-carrying capacity, further strengthening cost-effective freight movement along the West Coast corridor. The first upgraded rake began operations on 5 November 2025, and the second commenced service on 3 December 2025.

The Ro-Ro system allows loaded trucks to be transported on railway wagons, reducing fuel costs, transit time, and congestion on the Konkan Highway.

Rake Composition

  • 15 BRN wagons – truck loading capacity up to 57 MT

  • 35 BOXN wagons – truck loading capacity up to 50 MT

Weight Guidelines

  • Maximum weight: 57 MT (BRN), 50 MT (BOXN)

  • Enhanced 57-MT limit applies only to these two upgraded rakes

  • Other Ro-Ro rakes continue with a 50-MT limit

  • Excess weight charges (50–57 MT): ₹800 per MT + GST

Konkan Railway said the higher capacity will benefit transporters dealing in iron and steel, marble, tiles, construction materials, and other heavy cargo, offering a safer and more economical alternative to road transport.
