PM Modi Visits Nigeria, Holds Talks with President Tinubu to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a landmark visit to Nigeria, marking his first trip to the country in 17 years. This visit is part of a broader three-nation tour, which also includes Brazil and Guyana. PM Modi arrived in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, on the evening of November 16, 2024, and was warmly received by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory. Wike presented Modi with the ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja, symbolizing the trust and honor extended by the Nigerian people.

Key Objectives of the Visit: The primary goal of Modi’s visit is to enhance the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, focusing on areas such as trade, investment, capacity building, and cultural exchanges. During his visit, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The two leaders will review the current state of strategic cooperation and discuss further steps to strengthen bilateral relations. Several agreements are expected to be signed following the talks.

Significance of the Visit: This visit reflects India’s growing interest in deepening its ties with West Africa, particularly with Nigeria, which plays a crucial role in the region’s economy and demographic landscape. Nigeria is India’s largest trading partner in Africa, and the visit aims to build on this strong foundation.

Engagements and Community Interaction: PM Modi will also engage with the Indian diaspora in Nigeria, one of the largest in West Africa, and address their concerns and aspirations. The Indian community in Nigeria has expressed great enthusiasm and pride in hosting the Prime Minister, with many welcoming him through cultural displays.

Upcoming Leg of the Tour: Following his visit to Nigeria, PM Modi will head to Brazil, where he will participate in the G20 summit hosted by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. India is an active participant in the G20 troika alongside Brazil and South Africa. The discussions at the summit will focus on global issues, with PM Modi representing India’s perspectives and discussing the outcomes of India’s recent G20 and Voice of the Global South summits.

In the final phase of his tour, PM Modi will visit Guyana from November 19 to 21 for a state visit, further strengthening India’s diplomatic outreach.
