Severe Cyclonic Storm “Remal” Threatens Coastal Regions: IMD Issues Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning as the Severe Cyclonic Storm “Remal” looms large over the coastal areas of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal. Pronounced as “Re-Mal,” the storm is anticipated to make landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara, close to the southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh) by midnight tonight, the 26th of May 2024.

  1. Landfall and Intensity: Remal is expected to hit the coasts with a maximum sustained wind speed ranging from 110-120 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 135 kmph.
  2. Heat Wave Conditions: Meanwhile, severe heat wave conditions are predicted to persist over the plains of Northwest India, including Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh, for the next 4-5 days.
  3. Monsoon Progress: The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into some parts of the Southwest Bay of Bengal, Central Bay of Bengal, and Northeast Bay of Bengal.
  4. Realized Weather: Over the past 24 hours, heat wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed over many parts of Rajasthan, with the highest maximum temperature of 50.0°C reported in Phalodi (West Rajasthan). Heavy to very heavy rainfall was observed at isolated places, including Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Bihar, and Nagaland, Manipur & Tripura.
  5. Forecast & Warnings: The IMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and storm surges for various coastal regions. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the central and north Bay of Bengal until the storm subsides.
  6. Precautionary Measures: Authorities have suggested actions such as total suspension of fishing operations, regulating surface transport and shipping operations, and advising coastal hutment dwellers to move to safer places.
  7. Maximum Temperature Forecast: Areas in West Rajasthan and other regions are expected to experience maximum temperatures greater than 40°C, with heat wave conditions prevailing over several states.
  8. Agromet Advisories: Farmers are advised to take precautions against heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and heat wave conditions to mitigate potential damage to crops and livestock.
