Severe Cyclone “Remal” Threatens West Bengal Coast: IMD Issues Red Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a red alert as Severe Cyclonic Storm “Remal” gathers strength over the North Bay of Bengal. Pronounced as “Re-Mal,” the cyclone has intensified rapidly, prompting warnings for the West Bengal coast.
As of 0530 hrs IST on May 26, 2024, Cyclonic Storm “Remal” was positioned near latitude 19.5°N and longitude 89.3°E, approximately 290 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 330 km south of Mongla (Bangladesh), 270 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal), 390 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), and 310 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal).
Forecasted to intensify further, “Remal” is expected to cross Bangladesh and the adjoining West Bengal coast between Sagar Island and Khepupara, southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh), by midnight on May 26, 2024. The cyclone is anticipated to bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph.
The IMD has issued various warnings, including heavy rainfall alerts for coastal districts of West Bengal, Odisha, and northeastern states. The cyclone’s impact is predicted to cause significant damage, including major damage to thatched houses, uprooting of trees, disruption of power and communication lines, and inundation of low-lying areas.
Precautionary measures have been advised for residents in the affected regions, including the total suspension of fishing operations, regulation of surface transport and shipping operations, and relocation of coastal hutment dwellers to safer places.
The IMD continues to closely monitor the situation, with updates scheduled regularly. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the sea until the cyclone subsides.
