Indian Navy Commissions INS Tarmugli, Enhancing Coastal Security
In a remarkable ceremony held at Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam under the Eastern Naval Command’s aegis on December 14, 2023, the Indian Navy officially commissioned INS Tarmugli, a Fast Attack Craft (FAC). Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, Chief of Materiel, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
INS Tarmugli, a Trinkat Class FAC, marks a significant chapter in naval operations. Originally gifted to the Maldivian Naval Defence Forces (MNDF) by the Government of India in 2006, the ship was returned to the Indian Navy in May of the current year. After undergoing extensive restoration work at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam, the FAC has been reintroduced in its present form.
The warship is equipped with MTU engines, cutting-edge communication equipment, a 30 mm gun, and an advanced radar system. Its primary role will involve coastal surveillance and the protection of Offshore Development Areas (ODAs) in the KG Basin area along the East Coast of India.
Commander Satpal Singh Sangwan is at the helm of INS Tarmugli, operating under the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Andhra Pradesh). The 46-meter ship, named after a picturesque island in the Andaman group, boasts a displacement of 320 tonnes and can achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots. The commissioning of INS Tarmugli reaffirms the Indian Navy’s commitment to bolstering maritime security and coastal defense capabilities.
