Urgent Rescue Operation at Silkyara Tunnel Collapse Site in Uttarakhand

Amidst the ongoing Chardham Mahamarg Pariyojana, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) is facing a critical situation as the Silkyara Tunnel, a vital part of the project, witnessed a collapse. The tunnel, aimed at joining the Gangotri and Yamunotri axis under the Radi pass in Uttarakhand, is undergoing construction as a part of a 4.531 km long two-lane bi-directional tunnel.

The collapse, which occurred at a section 205m to 260m from the Silkyara portal, trapped approximately 40 workers who were engaged in reprofiling work. The incident was immediately reported, prompting swift action by state and central government agencies, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), MoRTH, NHIDCL, NHAI, BRO, and other state departments.

To ensure the safety and swift evacuation of the trapped workers, various measures have been implemented. Excavation work, coupled with shotcreting, has commenced to address the 40-meter collapsed tunnel section. Additionally, a 900mm diameter MS Steel Pipe is being deployed with the help of a Hydraulic Jack to facilitate the evacuation of trapped workers.

Experts from project authorities, contractors, geological experts, and senior officials from NHIDCL, NHAI, and other concerned departments are actively involved in monitoring and directing the rescue efforts. The removal of loose debris is underway, and every effort is being made to evacuate the stranded workforce at the earliest.

The incident highlights the challenges and risks associated with the ambitious infrastructure project, emphasizing the need for stringent safety measures and effective emergency response protocols. Authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the well-being of the trapped workers and the successful completion of the Silkyara Tunnel project.
